The phenomenon that propels Portuguese music
Calema is a duo of São Toméan origin formed by two brothers, António Oliveira Ferreira and Fradique Oliveira Ferreira. The duo's name refers to the distinctive undulations on the African coast; Calema means "wave" in their native language.
They began singing together at a young age, pursuing music as a hobby. In 2008, they moved to Portugal to pursue their studies in the music industry. Fradique earned a degree in multimedia in Évora, and António earned a degree in video production in Lisbon. In 2011, they moved to France with their family, continued making music, and created their YouTube channel.
They then released their first full-length album, Bomu Kêlê, in 2014, which failed to achieve widespread success. But it was with their follow-up, A Nossa Vez, released three years later, that the duo gained recognition. It reached number three in Portugal, driven by the title track, which was widely viewed on online video platforms. It was followed two years later by an album recorded live, Ao Vivo No Campo Pequeno, which also reached number three in Portugal. A few months later, the duo released a new studio album, Yellow, which reached number one. The two brothers appeared as guests on a track by Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred, "Enty Hayati," performed in Arabic, Portuguese, and English. In 2022, the track "A Nossa Vez," released in 2017, passed the 100 million views mark, a first in Portugal, and immediately appeared in the country's charts at number 183. Two years later, "Emmène-moi" became a new viral hit in Portugal, France and other European countries, followed by "Tell me" and "Amar pela Metade (Love halfway)", as a prelude to the album Voyage.
